PERSONAL LEADERSHIP

SEMESTER 2

Feedback on portfolio and learning outcomes

I made a website prototype for my portfolio and went to get some feedback on it. The first time I went the teacher told me that she really likes the direction that I am going in and to try and experiment to see what will fit the team that I am going for. So, I worked more on the mockup and went for feedback again. The teacher was quite pleased with the results. I asked some questions about the structure of some pages and about a functionality I wanted to add. I received the answers I was looking for and got back to work. I went to another one of my teachers to get his opinion of my work and he liked it very much and gave me some helpful suggestions for the future when I start writing the code. All the feedback I received helped me to come up with a pleasing result in the end.

OUTCOMES

Why I chose Media design

I decided to chose media design over software. I have a background in programing since my high school was a technical school and I was in a profile called applied programing. We mostly worked with C# but had some lessons for JavaScript, Python and more. Also for my graduation I had to develop a full stack website and write a documentation for it. I have always been interested in the front end aspect of programing and creating this project further confirmed that. So when the time came for me chose a profile in Fontys I was torn between the software and media profiles. I had to choose between the one that I have a lot of experience in and have many job opportunities or the one that I was really interested in and would learn something new about. After speaking to teachers and thinking about it quite a lot I decided to go with my heart and give media a try and so far I don’t regret my decision even for a second.

Inspiration for portfolio

For my portfolio design I looked for inspirations online. For the design of my portfolio I initially had the idea to use some kind of galaxy theme so I wanted to see if I can find some similar websites online. While I was looking for that a really interesting website came up. I really liked the structure and the big titles it had so I saved it just in case. The following days I just found a picture of a water bubble with a black background and that really inspired me too. So I decided to go in a different direction and combine the water bubble colors with the style of the cool website I found. I researched some more website designs and found another one that had some interesting shapes that looked similar to the bubble. Next I started working on the Figma prototype having my inspirations in mind and the result that came out of it was a combination of all my ideas. I am really pleased with the result.

Final presentation branding project

Me and my group had to present everything we did for the branding project in front of our client fellow students and a teacher. At the end of the branding project we had to create a presentation showing everything that me and my group have created for our client in the branding project. I had the idea that on top of the presentation we should also create and print out some posters and business cards for the client so we can show physical copies of some of some products we created and to hand them out to the audience to take a look at. The plan was that two people would present, two people would give out the printed products and one person was going to change the slides of the presentation I was part of the “handing out posters” group. The presentation went really well and the client was really pleasantly surprised by the posters we made since we wanted them to be a surprise and didn't show them to him beforehand the teachers and the fellow students were also really pleased with our presentation.

Sprint review reflection UX

Me and my group had our first Sprint review with the client. During the third week of our UX project we had our first Sprint review. To prepare for it we first needed to establish what we're going to show to the client and what we wanted to know from them since we had some questions. After doing that we made the presentation which we all agreed that we wouldn't rely on for the most part because we want it the process to be like guided discussion and the presentation was just something for us to keep us on track. In the presentation we mostly stated the conclusions we got 2 up to this point and our goals for the last weeks of the project. After we were done with the Sprint review we again did at the briefing session to review what happened. We all agree that it could have gone better. We asked about the problems that we encountered with the product and realized that he was our fault for not testing it outside where it's supposed to be used. Also we showed them some of the early designs we made and we realized that we didn't really think about it enough since the company representatives asked us why we chose to make a mobile version without a desktop one and we didn't really have an answer for that. After stating all of the mistakes that we made we started working on improving for next time.

IT Festival

I attended an IT festival at Fontys. I was really interested in the IT festival that Fontys was organizing Because they wanted to see some interesting creations other people made and get some inspiration for my Project X assignment. After my friend and I went there and registered, we walked around the building to see what events would be the most interesting to attend to. We first went to a lecture we saw which turned out to be a magic show. We stayed there for a bit after which we continued our tour. There were some XL games which we could participate in. They were a more interactive version of games we love like Candy Crush. When we went people were already playing but we watched them, and it looked really interesting. After that we went to a zone where fellow students were showing off games that they created. We stayed there the longest since it was quite interesting to us and we wanted to try them ourselves. To be completely honest the festival wasn't what I expected which might be an overlooking on my part since I didn't check the program beforehand. I thought they were going to be more creations of our peers, but it still assured me that the ideas I had for my Project X would be a great opportunity for me to learn.

User test portfolio

I performed a user test on my Portfolio to make sure that everything is understandable. Taking inspiration from the projects that we did and a suggestion form a friend I decided to perform a user test on the website that I developed. I asked a friend of mine who hasn't seen My Portfolio before to go through it and tell me if anything is difficult to find and can be worked on. After he went through the website I asked him some questions about it to see what he thinks. This user test give me a great insight whether or not my work looks finished and is easy to navigate. Help me understand that people can see my style of work through the projects I develop since this is one of my goals as a designer- for people to recognize when I worked on something through the visuals themselves. It made me very happy that the person I tested saw my vision clearly and liked it. Overall the user test went really well. The tester gave me some notes that I need to work on to improve the website but still found a lot over the features I included Well made and consistent. I will continue my work knowing that my footprint is visible in the work I do.

New toof for Project X [New]

I used a new technology for the creation of my Project X. For my final project of semester 2, I chose to recreate the popular mobile game Crossy Road using Three.js. I’ve always been interested in working with 3D, and this felt like the perfect opportunity to finally dive into it. Using Three.js not only helped me explore 3D in the browser, but also gave me the chance to strengthen my JavaScript skills since this is the language I want to focus on more seriously moving forward. This was also my first time developing a game. Up until now, I’ve mostly worked on websites, so this project gave me a whole new perspective on interactive media and game development. I followed a tutorial to build the base of the game, but I really wanted to go beyond that by designing my own character and obstacles and adding extra features to make the game feel more personal. Overall, this was a great learning experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone. I learned how to work with a completely new tool, and more importantly, how to plan my work, manage my time, and solve problems independently. I’m really proud of the result, especially for my first ever game, and I’m excited to keep building on these skills in future projects now that I have a solid starting point.
